Troop 546 FAQ
WHO ARE WE?:
Troop 546 is a boy-run organization in keeping with all the standards of the Boy Scouts of America.
THE AIMS OF THE BOY SCOUT PROGRAM:
The three primary aims of Boy Scouts are to build character, active citizenship through leadership, and mental and physical fitness in each of our members.
HOW DOES THE TROOP RUN?:
The Troop is made up of "patrols" or groups of four to eight Scouts (similar to Cub Scout “Dens”) who elect their own Patrol Leader to serve on the Patrol Leader Council. This Patrol Leader Council makes all decisions for Troop programs, and is led by the Senior Patrol Leader - a boy elected by the whole Troop. Together, and as a team, the Senior Patrol Leader and Patrol Leader Council plan and run all Troop programs under the careful advisement from a Scoutmaster and a team of many other trained adults.
ADVANCEMENT:
In addition to the weekly Troop meetings, Monthly camping trips, day hikes, bike trips,Town Days, and summer camps, if you choose, personal advancement plays a vital role in the development of each Scout. The primary difference between Cub Scout and Boy Scout advancement is that you will learn the responsibility of earning your own advancement-not led by your parent. Right from the start, we will assist you, and give you all the tools you will need to achieve your utmost on the 'Trail to Eagle Scout'. Older Scouts will serve as Troop Guides and will help design your program during the first year.
It is a long road, but one you will never forget. It will be filled with bumps and bruises, triumphs and accolades and every bit counts! Troop 546 has a long-standing tradition of Eagle Scouts. There have been 9 boys who achieved this highest honor in just the last 5 years, which is a higher than average percentage than nationally and is due to the commitment of the troop leadership. Come and be part of it.
WHAT DO I NEED?:
After joining, first and foremost, obtain a copy of the Boy Scout handbook!! After reviewing the parent's section (with your parents) and the beginning of the book, refer to Chapters 8 and 9 for some ideas of what equipment you will need. The one item you need to purchase right away is: the Khaki Boy Scout Shirt (with patches) (Class 'A' shirt) The shirt and the Boy Scout Handbook are available at the New England Scout Shop located in Woburn at 400 Cummings Park. The Scout Shop, as well as many sporting goods stores, will be a good resource in purchasing any equipment. Remember, you don't need to buy the most expensive equipment you can find, but neither should you buy the cheapest. Another hint- it isn't necessary to purchase every bit of equipment all at once, you can gradually build up your inventory in stages. Scouting/camping equipment makes a great birthday or holiday gift! Ask your Senior Patrol leader or one of the Scoutmaster group if you need advice or help in this area. The Troop does have patrol boxes with cooking supplies for use by the Patrols on camping trips. There are also some tents available.
